  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Botanical support for prostate health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Overactive bladder, Prostate function, Lower urinary tract symptoms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Pumpkin is rated "Possibly Effective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Pumpkin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Overactive bladder.

Pumpkin seed oil has possibly effective evidence for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where an enlarged prostate causes urinary symptoms in older men. For other uses listed — male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia), bladder inflammation (interstitial cystitis), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections — the evidence we hold is insufficient to say whether it works.

More research is needed in those areas.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pumpkin seed oil is generally well tolerated as a supplement in adults. The most common side effects are mild: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported. Two case reports describe hair loss occurring 1–3 weeks after eating a meal with bitter-tasting or wild pumpkin, attributed to high levels of a naturally occurring compound called cucurbitacin — something to be aware of if you notice hair shedding.

Safety data on concentrated pumpkin seed oil during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited; talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you are pregnant or nursing.

How can one product interact with so many drugs?

Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.

Most people have none. The common ones — if they happen — are mild: belly discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) is rare but possible.
