What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: glycine, a simple amino acid. That's it — no fillers or other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Glycine is possibly effective for schizophrenia based on available evidence. For other conditions we have data on — 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3-PGDH) deficiency, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and cystic fibrosis — there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Glycine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, but long-term safety data are limited. A small number of trial participants reported mild sedation, which went away once they stopped taking it.
Others experienced soft stools, nausea, vomiting, upper digestive discomfort, irritability, insomnia, fatigue, memory impairment, headache, dry mouth, and sensory changes — though it's unclear how many of these are actually linked to glycine itself. All reported symptoms resolved quickly after stopping.
There isn't enough reliable safety data to know whether glycine is safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take clozapine (Clozaril) for schizophrenia, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting glycine — a small trial showed it may reduce the medication's effectiveness.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Glycine is a straightforward single-amino-acid supplement that's generally well tolerated. If you take clozapine for schizophrenia, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the one documented interaction could affect how well your medication works.
For most other uses, there simply isn't enough evidence yet to know if it helps. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you decide if it's right for your situation.
