Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Gotu Kola Max-V contains 2 active ingredients—both gotu kola. This is gotu kola extract in capsule form.
The product also includes inactive ingredients (cellulose, silica, and vegetable stearate) that help hold the capsule together and keep the powder from clumping.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for gotu kola shows mixed results. It's rated possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor blood flow in the legs) and burns.
For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), cognitive function, Alzheimer's disease, and generalized anxiety, the evidence is either insufficient to rate or points toward it being ineffective. Talk with your doctor about whether this supplement makes sense for what you're trying to address.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated short-term, but quality evidence is limited and liver concerns have been reported. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea.
Rare but serious concern is liver toxicity—though one study of 120 mg daily for six months didn't show liver damage, the overall safety picture isn't fully clear. Not enough safety data exists for pregnancy, and it's traditionally been avoided then.
Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best avoided. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Gotu Kola Max-V, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on drugs that affect the liver or any CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, opioids, benzodiazepines). Gotu kola may increase the sedative effect of these medications or add to liver stress.
The documented interactions span a broad range of medications, so it's important to confirm your specific drugs first.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola Max-V may help with venous insufficiency or burns, but the evidence is limited and the product carries risks—particularly with liver function and interaction with sedating drugs. If you're on any medications, especially ones that affect the liver or make you drowsy, check them against this product before starting.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist to see whether it's a fit for you.

Gotu Kola Max-V by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola Max-V by Douglas Laboratories interacts with medications through its gotu kola content.
The most serious concern is with drugs that affect the liver (hepatotoxic drugs)—gotu kola may add to their potential to cause liver damage. There are at least four case reports of liver toxicity linked to gotu kola use, though it's unclear whether gotu kola was the actual cause in those cases.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gotu kola may also increase the sedative effects of CNS depressants (drugs like benzodiazepines, sleep aids, and opioids). Laboratory research suggests gotu kola may bind to GABA receptors, which are involved in calming the nervous system, so adding it to a medication that already has that effect could make you drowsy or impaired.
Although one clinical trial of gotu kola 120 mg daily for six months didn't show liver changes, the safety data overall is limited. Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications.
Before you start this supplement, run your exact medications through the tool on this page or discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.
