What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Guggul against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Guggul by Himalaya
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Himalaya Guggul contains 3 active ingredients, all forms of guggul: guggul extract, guggul powder, and guggul supercritical CO2 extract. These are different processing methods of the same resin from the mukul myrrh tree, traditionally used in Ayurvedic practice.
The product also contains plant-based cellulose as an inactive ingredient (capsule material).
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for guggul's effectiveness is limited. For obesity, the data rates it as possibly ineffective.
For acne, hemorrhoids, and high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), there isn't enough reliable evidence to establish whether it works or not. If you're considering this product for any of these purposes, talk with your doctor about whether the current evidence supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Guggul is generally well tolerated by mouth, but digestive upset—including belching, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting—occurs in some people. Skin reactions, both allergic and non-allergic, are common and appear to depend on dose; studies show skin reactions at 3% of users taking 1,000 mg three times daily versus 15% at 2,000 mg three times daily.
A rare but serious side effect is rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown). The safety data advises against use during pregnancy because guggul may stimulate the uterus.
There isn't enough safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding—talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to use it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure or heart medications like propranolol or diltiazem, blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelets), birth control pills or estrogen therapy, thyroid hormone, tamoxifen, or any drug metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme—a very common class that includes many statins, immunosuppressants, and other drugs. All these interactions are rated Moderate severity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Guggul is a traditional Ayurvedic resin with documented interactions across multiple medication types—especially blood pressure, heart, blood thinner, hormone, and thyroid drugs. If you take any of those, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Even without medications, expect possible digestive upset and skin reactions, and avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Guggul by Himalaya Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Himalaya Guggul has moderate interactions documented across multiple medication types.
Through its guggul content—present in extract, powder, and supercritical CO2 extract forms—this product may reduce the effectiveness of propranolol (Inderal) and diltiazem (Cardizem), both blood pressure and heart medications, by lowering how much of the drug reaches your bloodstream.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Guggul may also interfere with a large class of drugs broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 (cytochrome P450 3A4 substrates), potentially weakening their effects. It can increase the risk of bleeding when combined with blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (anticoagulants/antiplatelets).
Additionally, guggul has estrogen-like activity in the body, which means it may raise the risk of side effects if you take estrogen hormone therapy, birth control pills (contraceptives), or tamoxifen (Nolvadex), a hormone-sensitive cancer medication.
Thyroid hormone therapy is another concern—guggul may increase the risk of adverse effects based on animal research suggesting thyroid-stimulating activity. Altogether, these interactions span 758 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to search your exact prescriptions before starting. If you take any heart, blood pressure, blood thinner, hormone, or thyroid medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
