Lavender is generally well tolerated in approved forms, but the essential oil is toxic if swallowed and can irritate some people's skin. Common side effects from oral lavender include breath odor, constipation, diarrhea, stomach upset, belching, headache, and nausea.

Topically, allergic skin reactions can occur; rare cases of gynecomastia (breast development) have been reported in prepubertal boys using lavender oil. Feverfew is generally well tolerated short-term but can trigger allergic reactions and mouth irritation; chewing fresh leaves is riskier.

Gastrointestinal upset (heartache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating) is common. Stopping feverfew after long-term use may cause "post-feverfew syndrome" with anxiety, headaches, and insomnia.

Periwinkle contains toxic alkaloids and is regarded as unsafe for oral use; it can cause liver and kidney damage, nerve injury, stomach problems, skin flushing, and low blood pressure. Meadowsweet contains salicylates and in large doses may cause nausea and stomach complaints; salicylate-related side effects like stomach irritation and ringing in the ears are theoretically possible but not well studied.

Theoretically, feverfew might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that feverfew may inhibit platelet aggregation. Additionally, in one case report, a 36-year-old patient taking feverfew 2400 mg daily for 3 months experienced vaginal bleeding and a prolonged menstrual cycle, with a modest increase in partial thromboplastin time (PTT) and prothrombin time (PT).

Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
