Holy Basil Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Holy Basil against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: certified organic holy basil. It's delivered as a liquid, combined with grain alcohol and deionized water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data we have on holy basil doesn't establish reliable evidence for the uses it's marketed for — generalized anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, or diabetes all carry a rating of insufficient evidence. That doesn't mean it won't help you; it means the clinical trials strong enough to prove it either don't exist yet or are too small to be conclusive.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated short-term in adults, but long-term safety data are limited. In clinical trials, a small number of participants taking holy basil reported loose stools or nausea when taken orally; topical use (like mouthwash) was reported to cause a bitter taste.
Because animal data raise safety concerns and human safety isn't established, the data advises against use during pregnancy. There isn't enough reliable safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin or warfarin), diabetes medications, or the sedative pentobarbital. These are the medication types with documented moderate-severity interactions in the data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy Basil by Village Vitality is generally well tolerated short-term, but interacts with blood thinners, diabetes medications, and certain sedatives — and the evidence for what it treats isn't yet solid. If you take any of those medication types, or if you're pregnant or nursing, check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.
It's worth discussing with them whether this product fits your situation.

Holy Basil by Village Vitality Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Holy Basil by Village Vitality interacts with blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, and the sedative pentobarbital.
The most serious documented concern is with blood thinners: animal research shows holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly by slowing how platelets clump together. If you take any blood thinner — whether prescription like warfarin or over-the-counter aspirin — there's a theoretical risk of increased bleeding.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Holy basil may also lower blood sugar (glucose). Small clinical trials show it can decrease fasting blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, which means if you're already on diabetes medication, combining them could push your blood sugar too low.
Additionally, animal studies suggest holy basil seed oil might boost the sedative effects of pentobarbital (a barbiturate); we don't yet know if this happens in humans or extends to other sleep aids.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Before you start this product, run your exact medications — especially any blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives — through the interaction checker on this page.
