Krill Oil Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Krill Oil against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Krill Oil by Natural Nutra
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Natural Nutra Krill Oil is a softgel with 6 ingredients. The active ones are krill oil itself (the base ingredient, rich in omega-3s), astaxanthin (a natural pigment from krill), and three omega-3 components: eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and phospholipids.
The inactive ingredients are the softgel capsule, glycerin, and water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Krill oil is possibly effective for dry eye — that's the strongest evidence in our data. For aging skin, Alzheimer disease, cancer, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and cognitive function, the evidence isn't established enough to rate it.
Astaxanthin shows similar gaps: the evidence for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome is insufficient to rate it either.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Krill oil is generally well tolerated at doses up to 4 grams daily. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — bloating, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fishy burps, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, and stomach discomfort.
Headache, tiredness, and dizziness have been reported rarely. These effects tend to be less severe or happen less often with krill oil than with fish oil.
Avoid krill oil if you have a shellfish allergy and use caution if you have a bleeding disorder. Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated, though long-term safety data are limited; common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stool.
There isn't enough safety data on either ingredient during pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (moderate risk of bleeding), diabetes medications (moderate risk of low blood sugar), or drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes like certain statins or cancer medications (moderate risk of decreased drug levels). No interactions are documented for the other ingredients we reviewed.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Krill oil may help dry eye, but evidence for other uses is too early to judge. The main caution is bleeding risk with blood thinners and possible blood sugar dips with diabetes drugs, plus theoretically reduced effectiveness of certain liver-metabolized medications through astaxanthin.
If you take anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, diabetes medications, or drugs broken down by your liver, check your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Krill Oil by Natural Nutra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Natural Nutra Krill Oil interacts with medications through its krill oil and astaxanthin content.
The most serious concern is a moderate risk of increased bleeding with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners and aspirin-like medications) — krill oil's omega-3 fatty acids may thin your blood further, raising bleeding risk, especially at higher doses.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Krill oil also carries a moderate risk with diabetes medications: theoretically, it might lower blood sugar too much, though a small study in type 2 diabetes patients showed no blood sugar reduction. Additionally, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs broken down by your liver's CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes — a moderate concern affecting a broad range of medications including some statins, certain cancer drugs, some antiretrovirals, and others metabolized these ways.
Altogether, these interactions span 839 individual medications. We could not check eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, phospholipids, or total omega-3 fatty acids — no interaction data are on file for them.
Before you start krill oil, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page.

For each ingredient in Krill Oil with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Krill Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
