L-lysine is possibly effective for herpes labialis, also called cold sores. The evidence for child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers isn't established enough to rate it one way or the other in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine from food is fine, but at high supplement doses it may cause stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or dyspepsia (indigestion). Long-term safety of supplemental lysine hasn't been well studied.
There's one rare case report of kidney damage linked to oral lysine, though this is not common. Safety in pregnancy hasn't been well studied for the supplement form, so talk with your doctor first.
The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough reliable information to know either way, so caution is advised and you should check with your doctor or pharmacist.
