Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 1 active ingredient: L-lysine, an amino acid (a building block of protein) at 500 mg per capsule. The inactive ingredients are the capsule itself, magnesium stearate (a flow agent), and cellulose (a filler).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) — the evidence suggests it may help, but it's not ironclad. For other uses listed here — speeding child growth, healing pressure ulcers, and healing diabetic foot ulcers — we don't have enough reliable evidence yet to rate how well it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lysine from food is fine, and the supplement is generally well tolerated at typical doses. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach upset, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
High doses haven't been well studied long-term. For pregnancy: the safety of L-lysine supplements during pregnancy isn't well studied, so talk with your doctor first.
For breastfeeding: there isn't enough reliable data, so caution is advised — check with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a drug for GI or motility issues), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — lysine may reduce how well it works.
The bottom line

L-lysine is a straightforward single-ingredient supplement that may help with cold sores. It's generally well tolerated, but high doses can cause stomach upset.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take a 5-HT4 agonist, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first.
