Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-lysine, an amino acid at 500 mg per capsule. The capsule itself, along with magnesium stearate and cellulose, are inactive ingredients that help hold the product together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-lysine is possibly effective for treating or shortening cold sores (herpes labialis). For other uses—child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers—the evidence we hold is insufficient to say whether it works.
If you're considering it for cold sores, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about whether it fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. High amounts may cause stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or indigestion, and long-term safety at high doses is not well studied.
One rare case report linked very high oral lysine use to kidney inflammation progressing to chronic kidney failure, though this is uncommon. Lysine from food is safe in pregnancy, but supplement safety during pregnancy is not well studied—check with your doctor first.
There is not enough reliable information on supplement use while breastfeeding, so talk it over with your healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a medication used for certain digestive disorders or functional gut conditions), check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this supplement—lysine may reduce its effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
L-lysine may be worth considering if you're looking for support with cold sores and want to try a possibly effective option. If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a medication for certain digestive conditions), check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Anyone with a history of kidney problems should also discuss it with their provider. At typical doses, it's generally well tolerated, but avoid very high amounts.
