L-Lysine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Lysine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-lysine, an amino acid your body uses for protein synthesis and immune function. L-lysine is one of the nine essential amino acids, meaning you need to get it from food or supplements since your body can't make it on its own.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-lysine is possibly effective for herpes labialis (cold sores) based on available evidence. For other uses listed—child growth, pressure ulcers, and diabetic foot ulcers—there isn't enough reliable evidence in the data we hold to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. However, high amounts may cause stomach upset (including abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion), and long-term safety of supplement use hasn't been thoroughly studied.
There's one rare case report of a person who developed kidney inflammation linked to oral lysine, though this is unusual. Supplement safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding hasn't been well studied, so talk with your doctor before taking this while pregnant or nursing.
Getting lysine from food is fine.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take 5-HT4 agonists (medications that stimulate serotonin receptors in the gut), talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting L-lysine—it may reduce how well these drugs work. No interactions are documented for the other active ingredients we could check, but always confirm with your healthcare provider before combining any new supplement with your medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
L-lysine may be worth considering if you're dealing with cold sores, though the evidence is modest. If you take any medications—especially those for gut motility or serotonin effects—check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting, since L-lysine can interact with certain drugs.
High doses may upset your stomach, and long-term safety data is limited.
