Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This supplement contains one active ingredient: L-lysine, an amino acid your body uses to build and repair tissues. L-lysine is available from food sources like meat, fish, and dairy, but this product delivers it in concentrated form as a capsule.

The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—microcrystalline cellulose, rice flour, ascorbyl palmitate, and silica—which serve as fillers and binders.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Lysine's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: amino acid building block for protein and muscle.
  • We looked for evidence on: Athletic performance, Child growth, Muscle strength, protein synthesis, collagen formation, wound healing.
  • The closest evidence on file: Lysine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Athletic performance (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lysine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Muscle strength, Child growth.

L-lysine is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis). The evidence we hold doesn't establish its usefulness for child growth, pressure ulcers, or diabetic foot ulcers — there isn't enough reliable data to say either way on those.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

L-lysine is generally well tolerated at typical doses. High amounts may cause stomach upset, though, and long-term safety at supplement levels hasn't been well studied.

The most common side effects reported from oral use are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and indigestion. One case report linked high-dose oral lysine to a kidney problem, though this is rare.

During pregnancy, eating lysine-containing foods is fine, but supplement safety hasn't been well studied — talk with your doctor before taking it as a supplement. There also isn't enough reliable information on supplement use while breastfeeding, so caution is advised and a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist would be wise.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Lysine.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 1 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take a 5-HT4 agonist (a medication for certain stomach or gut issues), confirm with your pharmacist or doctor before using L-lysine — it may reduce how well the drug works.

Free Form Amino Acid

L-Lysine is an essential free form amino acid that is a necessary building block for all protein in the body. L-Lysine plays a major role in calcium absorption, building muscle protein and the body's production of hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. L-Lysine also reduces the absorption of L-Arginine, an amino acid that can fuel herpes and cold sore outbreaks.

5-Ht4 Agonists

Theoretically, lysine may reduce the effects of 5-HT4 agonists.
Animal research suggests that L-lysine is a partial serotonin receptor 4 (5-HT4) antagonist and inhibits diarrhea induced by the 5-HT4 agonist, 5-hydroxytryptophane.
