Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-methionine, an amino acid your body uses in protein synthesis and as a precursor to other important compounds. The capsule itself is made from vegetarian cellulose.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Methionine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Methionine for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Neural tube birth defects — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

L-methionine is rated possibly effective for reducing the risk of neural tube birth defects. For acetaminophen poisoning, hay fever, asthma, and colorectal cancer, the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate whether it works.

If you're considering this supplement for a specific condition, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current evidence shows for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

When you get methionine from food — meat, fish, eggs, dairy — it's well tolerated at normal dietary amounts. High-dose supplements, though, need medical guidance.

The most common side effects reported in studies are dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, irritability, and vomiting; headache and increased homocysteine levels have also been noted. Serious side effects like brain swelling or hepatic encephalopathy are rare.

High-dose methionine (75–100 mg/kg daily) may raise homocysteine in your blood, a risk factor for vascular disease, though one study in people with type 2 diabetes and prior heart disease did not see this rise. Safety data on supplement doses during pregnancy and breastfeeding is limited; normal food amounts are expected to be fine, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement in either situation.

No known interactions

No medication interactions are currently documented for the matched ingredients — that isn't a guarantee none exist.

Why this rating?
  • None of the 1 matched ingredient has a documented medication interaction on file.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

L-methionine is an amino acid possibly effective for reducing neural tube birth defect risk; for other uses, evidence is insufficient. It's generally well tolerated at food levels but high-dose supplements carry potential side effects and warrant medical oversight.

If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any medications, discuss this supplement with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.

L-Methionine 500 mg by Metabolic Maintenance: Common Questions

Does L-Methionine 500 mg by Metabolic Maintenance interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in L-Methionine 500 mg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Methionine 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does L-methionine actually help prevent neural tube defects?
It's rated possibly effective for that — meaning there's some evidence, but it's not conclusive. If you're concerned about birth defect prevention, your doctor can talk you through what the full picture looks like for your pregnancy.
What are the most common side effects?
Dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, irritability, and vomiting are the ones reported most often. Headache and elevated homocysteine (a blood compound linked to vascular risk) have also been noted. Serious side effects are rare.
Is it safe to take while pregnant?
Normal food amounts of methionine are expected to be fine. Safety of supplement doses during pregnancy hasn't been proven, though, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement dose if you're pregnant or planning to be.
Is it safe while breastfeeding?
Food amounts are expected to be safe, but safety of supplement doses while breastfeeding isn't well studied. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this supplement if you're nursing.
Will this product raise my homocysteine levels?
High-dose methionine — 75–100 mg per kilogram of body weight daily — can increase homocysteine. A single 500 mg dose is unlikely to reach that threshold, but if you're concerned or have a personal or family history of heart disease, discuss it with your doctor.
