Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This powder contains one active ingredient: L-methionine, an amino acid your body uses to build protein and perform a number of metabolic functions. There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Methionine's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Methionine for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Neural tube birth defects — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for methionine is limited and mixed. Our data shows it's possibly effective for neural tube birth defects — meaning there's some promising evidence, but it's not yet conclusive.

For acetaminophen poisoning, hay fever, asthma, and colorectal cancer, the evidence we hold is insufficient to establish whether it works. That doesn't mean it's ineffective for those uses — just that reliable studies supporting it aren't in our current database.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Methionine from food sources is well tolerated. At supplement doses — especially high ones — side effects become more likely.

Common ones include dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure (hypotension), irritability, vomiting, headache, and increased homocysteine levels. Serious effects are rare but can include brain swelling (cerebral edema) and liver-related brain damage (hepatic encephalopathy).

High-dose methionine (75–100 mg/kg daily) may raise homocysteine, a risk factor for heart and blood vessel disease, though one study in people with type 2 diabetes and prior cardiovascular disease didn't see this effect. Because supplement doses haven't been proven safe in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.

No known interactions

No medication interactions are currently documented for the matched ingredients — that isn't a guarantee none exist.

Why this rating?
  • None of the 1 matched ingredient has a documented medication interaction on file.

No interactions are documented in our data for L-methionine. That said, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page to be sure — it's a quick step that could catch something we don't have flagged.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

L-methionine is a single amino acid supplement with limited established effectiveness for most uses. It's well tolerated at food-level amounts, but high supplement doses carry real side-effect risks and should only be used under medical guidance.

If you're pregnant, nursing, or taking medications, check with your pharmacist first.

Does L-Methionine Powder 1000 mg by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in L-Methionine Powder 1000 mg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Methionine Powder 1000 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help with neural tube defects?
The evidence we hold shows methionine is possibly effective for neural tube birth defects, meaning there's some promising research but it's not yet conclusive. Talk with your doctor about whether it's right for your situation — this is especially important in pregnancy.
What are the side effects I should watch for?
At supplement doses, you might experience dizziness, drowsiness, low blood pressure, irritability, vomiting, or headache. High doses can raise homocysteine levels, which is a concern for heart and blood vessel health. Serious side effects like brain swelling are rare. If you notice any of these, stop and tell your pharmacist or doctor.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Supplement doses of methionine haven't been proven safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you — they can help you weigh the possible benefits against the unknowns.
Is this powder a pure ingredient with no fillers?
Yes — this product lists no inactive ingredients, so what you're getting is L-methionine powder and nothing else.
How much of this should I take?
Our data doesn't specify a recommended dose. Because high-dose supplements carry real risks, including elevated homocysteine, work with your doctor or pharmacist to determine what's appropriate for your needs.
