What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tryptophan, an amino acid your body uses to produce serotonin and melatonin — compounds involved in mood, sleep, and other functions. The powder form has no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for L-tryptophan is mixed and often inconclusive. For depression, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — meaning the evidence doesn't support it as a reliable treatment.
For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Tryptophan is generally well tolerated by most people, though it can cause mild side effects like belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, gas, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting. In rare cases, it's been linked to a serious neurological condition called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS); however, almost all documented cases traced back to contaminated L-tryptophan from a single Japanese manufacturer in the 1989 outbreak.
The supplement was recalled and import restrictions put in place afterward. For pregnancy, the safety data is mixed — some evidence suggests it's possibly unsafe, so the data advises against it.
For breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so it's best avoided. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether L-tryptophan is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before starting L-Tryptophan, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any central nervous system depressants (sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, sedating pain relievers, or alcohol) — the risk is Major sedation. Also confirm any serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, migraine treatments, or tramadol) — the risk is Moderate but serious.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tryptophan is a reasonable option if you're exploring natural approaches to mood or sleep and your doctor agrees it's appropriate for you. It's not a proven treatment for depression, and the evidence for other uses is too thin to call.
The biggest caution is its interaction potential with sedating and serotonergic medications — if you take either type, check your specific drugs with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement.

L-Tryptophan monograph & interactionsL-Tryptophan by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tryptophan by BulkSupplements.com interacts with two major drug categories through its single active ingredient.
The most serious concern is with central nervous system depressants (CNS depressants) — sedating medications like sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, and pain relievers — where L-tryptophan can add to their drowsy, sedating effects. Research shows L-tryptophan itself causes fatigue and drowsiness, so combining it with these drugs could amplify that risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second concern is with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, migraine treatments, and others that raise serotonin). L-tryptophan is a building block your body uses to make serotonin, so pairing it with serotonergic medications could boost serotonin to unsafe levels, risking serotonin syndrome and other serious effects.
Altogether, these interactions span 394 individual medications. Before you start L-tryptophan, use the interaction checker on this page to verify your exact medications, or run them past your own doctor or pharmacist.
