What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lactase, an enzyme that breaks down lactose (the natural sugar in milk and dairy). If your body doesn't make enough lactase on its own — which is what happens with lactose intolerance — taking it as a supplement lets you digest dairy without the bloating, gas, or cramping.
The softgel also contains several inactive ingredients (soybean oil, gelatin, glycerin, purified water, yellow beeswax, soy lecithin, titanium dioxide, and sorbitol crystalline powder) that help deliver and protect the enzyme.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance — meaning it actually does help you digest dairy when your own enzyme production falls short. The evidence for its use in premature infant colic and related conditions is insufficient, so we can't say whether it works for those purposes based on the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactase is generally well tolerated when used as directed. A rare case of allergic reaction (contact dermatitis and nasal and eye symptoms) was reported in a worker exposed to powdered lactase, but this is not typical and usually doesn't occur in people taking the supplement normally.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety data indicates it's likely safe. However, because the data on regular use during pregnancy is limited, talk with your doctor before using it regularly if you're pregnant.
Similarly, since lactase acts only in the gut and isn't absorbed, the data suggests it should be fine while nursing, but ask your doctor or pharmacist first to be sure it fits your individual situation.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented for lactase in our data. Because it works only in your digestive tract and isn't absorbed into your bloodstream, it's not expected to affect how your medications work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're lactose intolerant, this enzyme can help you enjoy dairy without the uncomfortable side effects. It won't interact with your medications since it stays in your digestive system.
Before starting it regularly — especially if you're pregnant or nursing — check in with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it's right for you.
