Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: lactoferrin, a protein that occurs naturally in your body and in breast milk. Lactoferrin is taken orally as a supplement for various health purposes.

The capsule also contains acacia gum as an inactive ingredient (a binder).

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Lactoferrin's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Lactoferrin for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Pregnancy-related iron deficiency — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Sepsis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence is mixed. Lactoferrin is possibly effective for sepsis and pregnancy-related iron deficiency, based on the data we have.

However, it's been rated likely ineffective for reducing fetal and premature infant mortality and necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious bowel condition in newborns). For other uses, we hold no effectiveness data.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

At typical doses, lactoferrin is generally well tolerated. However, long-term safety data are limited, so use over extended periods should be approached cautiously.

At higher doses of 7.2 grams daily, you're more likely to experience side effects — constipation, diarrhea, anorexia (loss of appetite), and fatigue have been reported. In newborns, rare cases of jaundice, bloody stool, bowel obstruction, and intestinal perforation have occurred.

If you're pregnant, the safety data aren't complete, so use it only under medical supervision. While lactoferrin naturally appears in breast milk, we don't have solid safety data on taking supplements while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about this.

Lactoferrin by SuperSmart: Common Questions

Does Lactoferrin by SuperSmart interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Lactoferrin. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Lactoferrin contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will lactoferrin cause side effects at normal doses?
At typical doses, it's generally well tolerated. Some people report mild gastrointestinal side effects like diarrhea or constipation, but these are less common than with other iron supplements. Higher doses of 7.2 grams daily do increase the risk of side effects including fatigue and loss of appetite.
Is it safe to take lactoferrin if I'm pregnant?
Safety in pregnancy is not fully established, even though some studies have looked at it. Use only under medical supervision if you're pregnant — talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Can I take lactoferrin while breastfeeding?
Lactoferrin occurs naturally in breast milk, but we don't have solid safety data on supplements while breastfeeding. This is a question best answered by your doctor or pharmacist for your individual situation.
Does lactoferrin really work for infection or iron deficiency in pregnancy?
For sepsis and pregnancy-related iron deficiency, the evidence rates it as possibly effective — meaning some studies suggest it may help, but more research is needed. For other conditions like fetal mortality, the evidence suggests it's likely ineffective.
How long can I safely take lactoferrin?
It's generally well tolerated short-term, but high-quality long-term safety data are limited. If you're thinking of using it for weeks or months, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
