Lavender Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lavender against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: lavender flower extract from Lavandula angustifolia. The liquid also holds purified water and 12–15% certified organic alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
Lavender is possibly effective for period pain (dysmenorrhea). For cancer-related pain, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.
The data we hold isn't strong enough to rate lavender for hair loss (alopecia areata), anxiety before a procedure, or cancer-related fatigue—meaning we don't know yet whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken by mouth, lavender is generally well tolerated in food amounts and appears well tolerated at larger doses too. The most common side effects are breath odor, constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, belching, headache, and nausea.
Topically, it's generally well tolerated, though allergic skin reactions can happen with lavender oil. Rare serious cases of breast tissue growth in prepubertal boys have been reported with topical lavender oil use.
Safety data isn't robust enough for medicinal amounts unless your doctor approves. Essential oil is toxic if swallowed, and skin contact can irritate some people.
There's not enough reliable data on safety in pregnancy and lactation—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any CNS depressants—sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, certain pain relievers, or some antidepressants—check your specific medications with the search tool on this page before starting lavender. The combination at Moderate severity could deepen drowsiness and sedation.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This lavender extract may help with period pain, but evidence for other uses is either lacking or suggests it won't work. The main thing to watch is whether you take CNS depressants—the combination could make you drowsier.
If you do, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) flower extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, lavender might potentiate the therapeutic effects and adverse effects of CNS depressants.
Laboratory research suggests that lavender has sedative effects. However, clinical studies in patients taking oral lavender oil (Silexan) 160 mg for 10 weeks or taking lavender flower powder 1 gram daily for 2 months have not reported side effects of drowsiness, sedation, or sleepiness. There is still some concern that higher doses or different preparations of lavender might have additive effects with CNS depressant medications.
