The evidence for what lecithin does is mixed. Phosphatidyl choline shows possibly effective evidence for ulcerative colitis, but the evidence for other uses — including Alzheimer's disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, alcohol-related liver disease, and anxiety — is either insufficient or not there.
Soy lecithin appears likely ineffective for Alzheimer's disease and has insufficient evidence for age-related cognitive decline, hepatic steatosis with parenteral nutrition, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. If you're considering this for a specific condition, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients are generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. That said, high doses of phosphatidyl choline (particularly 30 grams a day, and some people feel effects at smaller amounts) can cause digestive upset, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and altered taste.
Soy lecithin most commonly causes abdominal pain, diarrhea, fullness, and nausea. If you have an egg or soy allergy, lecithin can trigger allergic skin reactions.
For pregnancy, choline (the active form) is needed, but how safe supplements beyond food amounts are during pregnancy isn't well studied — check with your doctor. There isn't enough data on supplement use while breastfeeding; talk with your healthcare provider first.
