Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Lotus by Herbal Terra has one active ingredient, lotus plumule extract, dry. Our data notes that its constituents neferine and isoliensinine have been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation in lab studies, which is the basis for the bleeding concern with blood thinners.

The other listed ingredients are inactive: alcohol, water, and glycerin.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Lotus product and its label doesn't state a use — see Lotus's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

Our data rates the evidence for every listed use as Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate. These uses are nausea and vomiting, pharyngitis, insomnia, obesity, menorrhagia, and bleeding.

In other words, whether lotus works for any of these is not established in the data we hold.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lotus is common as a food, but supplement safety has not been well studied in humans. Our safety notes say there is not enough safety data for medicinal amounts, so concentrated supplements should be avoided.

Allergic reactions such as hives (urticaria) and contact skin inflammation (contact dermatitis) have been reported. One case report described hives in a 6-year-old girl after she ate lotus root, and she also developed contact dermatitis where the root had touched her skin.

Our safety notes advise avoiding this product while breastfeeding, because its safety has not been established. We do not have pregnancy data on file for this product, so there is not enough information to know either way.
