What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: lutein 20 mg, a yellow pigment found naturally in leafy greens and other plants. Lutein accumulates in the eye and is thought to protect the light-sensitive tissue at the back of it.
The inactive ingredients that make up the softgel capsule are gelatin, safflower oil, glycerin, carob extract, purified water, and beeswax.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lutein has the strongest evidence for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, where it's rated possibly effective — meaning there's some support, but more research is needed to be certain. For retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lutein from food and typical supplement doses is generally well tolerated in adults. This product's 20 mg dose hasn't caused adverse effects in the studies we have on file.
The data does note that while lutein is naturally present in breast milk, the safety of higher supplement doses during pregnancy and lactation isn't well studied — so caution is advised, and it's worth discussing with your doctor or midwife if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
No known interactions
No interactions are documented for lutein in our data. Even so, it's always smart to run your complete medication list through the checker on this page or confirm with your own pharmacist before starting any new supplement.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in supporting eye health, especially for AMD or cataracts, lutein is a candidate worth considering — the evidence is suggestive but not definitive. Doses like this one appear well tolerated and show no documented drug interactions.
Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're pregnant, nursing, or taking other supplements.
