Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

The only active ingredient in this product is mullein leaf extract, dry, so the ingredient count is 1. Its effectiveness ratings cover bronchitis, asthma, cough, migraine headache, and diarrhea.

The product also lists alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Mullein product and its label doesn't state a use — see Mullein's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

Every effectiveness rating we hold for mullein is Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate. That covers bronchitis, asthma, cough, migraine headache, and diarrhea, so reliable evidence isn't established in the data we hold for any of these uses.

This doesn't prove mullein doesn't work, only that good evidence isn't there yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Mullein is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but human safety data are limited. Two case reports describe skin inflammation (dermatitis) with positive patch tests, either after skin contact with the whole plant or from breathing in plant dust at work.

In the skin contact case, the patient also reacted to other plants. The safety notes advise avoiding mullein during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety information.

They also say there isn't enough data to consider it safe while breastfeeding. Talk with your own doctor or pharmacist about your personal situation.

  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.

  • For scale: 122 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Lab tests on extracts from different parts of common and dense-flowered mullein plants show that they do have some blood-thinning effects, as they increase the time it takes for blood to clot. This is likely due to at least one of the known constituents of muellein, triterpenoid saponins. However, the effects appear to be mild and results have been inconsistent. Extracts from different plant parts have been show to have varying anticoagulant strengths, with water-based ones being more potent than alcohol-based extracts.
