Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: papain, an enzyme derived from papaya. Papain is used in supplements for a variety of purposes, though the evidence supporting most of those uses is not yet established.
The product has no inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence supporting papain for cancer, dental cavities, radiation skin damage, muscle soreness after exercise, shingles, and intestinal parasites is not established in the data we hold. No effectiveness ratings are available for the specific uses this product may claim.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Papain powder is generally well tolerated when taken orally at appropriate doses for short periods. At high doses, it may be unsafe and could cause serious irritation or injury to the esophagus and stomach.
More commonly, sensitive individuals may experience allergic reactions — itchy watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing, belly cramps, sweating, or diarrhea — or, if exposed to airborne papain dust (for example, in occupational settings), respiratory symptoms like wheezing, cough, and asthma. Topically, it may cause hives and itching in people allergic to papain.
Concentrated papain and unripe papaya products are not recommended in pregnancy due to safety concerns. There isn't enough reliable safety data to know whether supplemental papain is safe while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinner before starting this product. Papain may increase the drug's blood-thinning effect and raise your bleeding risk.
