Passionflower Extract Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Passionflower Extract against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Passionflower Extract by Oregon's Wild Harvest
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: passionflower extract in liquid form. The extract also contains alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Passionflower is rated possibly effective for insomnia and pre-procedural anxiety—the kind of worry you might have before a medical procedure. For alcohol use disorder and benzodiazepine withdrawal, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Passionflower is generally well tolerated short-term, but drowsiness is common—so don't drive or operate machinery after taking it. You should avoid this product during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety data and it may affect the uterus.
There also isn't enough information to use it safely while breastfeeding, so skip it then too. The most common side effects are confusion, dizziness, sensitivity reactions, and sedation.
A rare case of severe nausea, vomiting, and heart rhythm changes has been reported at very high doses; all symptoms resolved once the product was stopped.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before combining passionflower with sedative drugs (CNS depressants) like lorazepam, benzodiazepines, or other sleep aids—the combination can intensify drowsiness. Also double-check any medications that depend on OATP transporters or CYP3A4 enzymes to work, since passionflower may interfere with how your body processes them.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Passionflower may help with sleeplessness or pre-procedure anxiety, but its sedative effects mean it shouldn't be mixed with other sedating drugs without your doctor's okay. If you take any prescription medications—especially sedatives or drugs metabolized by your liver—check them against this product first.

Passionflower Extract by Oregon's Wild Harvest Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Passionflower Extract by Oregon's Wild Harvest does interact with medications, most notably with sedative drugs.
Passionflower has sedative effects of its own, so combining it with sedatives—like lorazepam or other CNS depressants—can add to their drowsiness and side effects. Research in both animals and people supports this risk.

Passionflower may also affect how your body handles certain other medications. It appears to inhibit OATP transporters, which could theoretically reduce how much of some drugs your body absorbs.
It may also induce CYP3A4 enzymes, potentially lowering the effectiveness of medications that rely on this enzyme pathway. These theoretical interactions are considered minor based on the available data.
Additionally, use the medication checker below to look up your exact prescriptions before you start this product.

Passionflower
Cns Depressants
Concomitant use of passion flower with sedative drugs might cause additive effects and side effects.
Research in animals and humans shows that passion flower has sedative effects which can be additive when used with sedative medications like lorazepam.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.
Organic Anion-Transporting Polypeptide Substrates (Oatp)
Theoretically, passion flower might reduce the bioavailability of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the passion flower constituents apigenin and vitexin inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2. This inhibition may be dose-dependent. One specific high-flavonoid passion flower extract (Valverde) seems to inhibit OATP2B1 and OATP1A2, while another extract with a lower flavonoid concentration (Arkocaps) shows less potent inhibition. OATPs are responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds into the body; however, the specific activities of OATP2B1 and OATP1A2 are not well characterized.
