Does it work?

Insufficient evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Insufficient

There isn't enough reliable clinical evidence to rate this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: allergy and airway inflammation support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Asthma, Atopic dermatitis, Food allergy.
  • The closest evidence on file: Perilla is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Perilla is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Asthma.

The effectiveness data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate perilla for age-related cognitive decline, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, osteoporosis, cancer, or headache. In plain terms, we don't have solid research backing its use for any of these conditions right now.

If you're thinking about trying it for one of these reasons, that's something to discuss with your doctor, since the science isn't settled.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Orally, perilla is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement-strength products haven't been studied much. The main thing to know: anaphylaxis — a serious allergic reaction — has been reported in people who ate perilla seeds, and research suggests a compound called oleosin may be responsible.

If you have a tree nut or seed allergy, talk to your pharmacist before trying this. Occupational asthma has also been reported from inhaling smoke from roasted perilla seeds.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data to recommend medicinal amounts of perilla, so it's best to avoid it. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, nursing, or planning to be.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Perilla Extract is generally well tolerated as a food source, but supplement-strength products are not well studied. The biggest safety concern is the rare risk of a serious allergic reaction, especially if you have seed or tree nut allergies.

We have no evidence it works for the conditions it's marketed for. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a history of allergies.
