A rare but serious risk is anaphylaxis — a severe allergic reaction — particularly in people with a known perilla seed allergy; occupational asthma from breathing smoke from roasted perilla seeds has also been reported. During pregnancy, the safety data advises against medicinal amounts of perilla.
The same goes for breastfeeding — there isn't enough data to know whether it's safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant or nursing.
