How safe is it?

Perilla seed extract is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but supplement-strength products haven't been studied thoroughly. The most common side effect from topical use is dermatitis (skin irritation).
Rarely, people have reported anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) after consuming perilla seeds — some research suggests a compound called oleosin may be responsible for perilla allergies. Additionally, occupational asthma has been reported from inhaling smoke from roasted perilla seeds.
