Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Perimine contains a single active ingredient: perilla seed extract. Perilla is a plant used traditionally in Asian cuisines and herbal practice.

The product also includes inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, sodium starch glycolate, silica, and magnesium stearate — which are common tablet binders and fillers.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Perilla's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: promote healthy respiratory and immune function.
  • We looked for evidence on: Asthma, Allergic rhinitis (hay fever), Common cold, Cough, seasonal allergies, airway inflammation — and 1 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Perilla is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Allergic rhinitis (hay fever) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Perilla is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Asthma, Common cold, Cough.

The evidence for perilla seed extract is still developing. Our data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for age-related cognitive decline, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), asthma, osteoporosis, cancer, and headache.

That means research so far hasn't established whether it works for these uses — not that it doesn't work, just that we don't have solid proof yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Orally, perilla seed extract is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement-strength products haven't been studied extensively. A rare but serious concern is anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) — many cases have been reported in adults and children who consumed perilla seeds, and some research points to a compound called oleosin as the likely culprit.

Topically, dermatitis (skin irritation) has been reported. Additionally, breathing in smoke from roasted perilla seeds can trigger occupational asthma in some people.

The safety data advises against taking medicinal amounts during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Perimine is a single-ingredient supplement with no documented drug interactions. However, perilla hasn't been well studied at supplement doses, and anaphylaxis — though rare — is a documented risk if you're allergic to it.

If you're considering this product for a specific health goal, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist first, especially if you have a known seed allergy.

Perimine by Metagenics: Common Questions

Does Perimine by Metagenics interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Perimine. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Perimine contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take Perimine if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against taking medicinal amounts of perilla seed extract during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, because there isn't enough safety data to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you.
What are the side effects I should watch for?
Perilla seed extract is generally well tolerated orally. The main concern is anaphylaxis — a severe allergic reaction — which has been reported in some adults and children who consumed perilla seeds. If you have a seed allergy, be especially cautious. Topically, skin irritation (dermatitis) has been reported.
Does Perimine actually work for hay fever, asthma, or cognitive decline?
We don't have reliable evidence yet to say whether it works for any of these uses — including hay fever, asthma, age-related cognitive decline, osteoporosis, cancer, or headache. The research just isn't there to prove it one way or the other.
Is perilla seed extract safe at supplement doses?
Perilla has been eaten as a food for a long time and is generally well tolerated. But supplement-strength products haven't been studied much, so we don't have as much safety data for high-dose use. That's why it's worth checking with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
