Protease and lipase are generally well tolerated in most adults, though some people report digestive upset or allergic reactions. Rarely, people exposed to airborne protease (such as in occupational settings) have developed allergic rhinitis or asthma-like symptoms.
Serious gastrointestinal effects, including necrotizing enterocolitis, have been reported in premature infants given recombinant lipase products, though this product is not labeled for infants. For pregnancy, the safety data on protease advises against use unless prescribed by your doctor; lipase has little safety data in pregnancy, so use only if your doctor recommends it.
During breastfeeding, protease is not recommended without medical advice, and lipase safety has not been well studied—check with your healthcare provider first.
