This product contains 3 active ingredients: beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and campesterol — all plant sterols (phytosterols) that occur naturally in plant oils and seeds. Beta-sitosterol is the most studied of the three.
The capsule itself and the inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, magnesium stearate, calcium carbonate, and the capsule material — are there to hold and deliver the active ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Beta-sitosterol is likely effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), a condition that affects urinary flow in older men. It's possibly effective for familial hypercholesterolemia (an inherited cholesterol disorder) and coronary heart disease.
The evidence on stigmasterol and campesterol isn't established in the data we hold.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-sitosterol is generally well tolerated when used short-term, though you should check with your healthcare provider before starting. The most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, and nausea.
There's also a report of acne worsening in some people taking beta-sitosterol alone or with saw palmetto, and one case report of acute pancreatitis, though this is rare. There isn't enough safety data to recommend this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
