What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin meal at 450 mg per capsule. Pumpkin seeds and flesh have been used traditionally to support urinary and prostate health.
The inactive ingredients are gelatin and water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for pumpkin is mixed. It's possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — a common enlargement of the prostate gland in aging men.
For androgenic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections, the evidence is insufficient to rate it one way or the other. Talk with your doctor about whether pumpkin fits your particular health goal.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin as a food is well tolerated. Concentrated seed supplements like this one are generally well tolerated in adults, though abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting have been reported — usually mild.
A rare serious reaction (anaphylaxis, a severe allergic response) is on record. Avoid this product if you've had an allergic reaction to pumpkin or squash before.
There is not enough data on the safety of concentrated pumpkin supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.
Also note: two case reports link high-dose pumpkin or bitter squash (which may contain toxic compounds called cucurbitacins) to temporary hair loss; ordinary pumpkin products are unlikely to carry that risk, but it's worth knowing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, this product is a Moderate concern — pumpkin may reduce your body's ability to clear it, raising its level in your blood. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting to see if your dose needs adjusting.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pumpkin meal may help with prostate enlargement, though the evidence for other uses is thin. The main thing to watch: if you take lithium, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — pumpkin might raise your lithium level.
For most other people, it's generally well tolerated, but talk it over with your own healthcare provider to make sure it's right for you.
