Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Pumpkin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: immune function and hair and nail health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Androgenic alopecia, nail health, skin health.
  • The closest evidence on file: Pumpkin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Androgenic alopecia (Natural Medicines).

The strongest evidence supports pumpkin seed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) — difficulty urinating related to prostate enlargement — where it's rated possibly effective. For androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (chronic bladder pain), intestinal parasite infection, and urinary tract infections, the evidence in our data is insufficient to rate it.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pumpkin as a food is generally well tolerated. Concentrated seed-oil supplements like this one are also generally well tolerated in most adults, though the data on safety in concentrated form is less robust than for whole pumpkin.

The most common side effects reported are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Anaphylaxis is rare but has been reported.

There are also two case reports of substantial hair loss 1–3 weeks after eating bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with high concentrations of cucurbitacin, a compound found mainly in wild varieties. For pregnancy and breastfeeding: we don't hold enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements during either.

Regular pumpkin as food is fine, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this concentrated supplement if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Pumpkin.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: lithium.
  • For scale: 1 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take lithium, do not start this product without checking with your doctor or pharmacist — pumpkin may reduce how your body clears it and cause levels to climb. For all other medications, use the search tool on this page to confirm you're in the clear.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Pumpkin Seed Extract may help with prostate enlargement symptoms, though evidence for other uses is lacking. It's generally well tolerated but does interact with lithium — if you take that medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Pregnant and breastfeeding people should talk it over with their own healthcare provider before starting.

Pumpkin Seed by Pure Herbs: Common Questions

Does Pumpkin Seed by Pure Herbs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Pumpkin Seed has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Pumpkin Seed contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is pumpkin seed extract used for?
Pumpkin seed has been studied most for benign prostatic hyperplasia — trouble urinating caused by prostate enlargement — where there's possibly effective evidence. It's also been looked at for hair loss, bladder pain, parasites, and urinary tract infections, but the evidence there isn't established yet.
What are the most common side effects?
The most common ones are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Most people tolerate it well, but these do show up in trial data and case reports.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
We don't have enough safety data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Regular pumpkin as food is fine, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this concentrated form — they can weigh the pros and cons for your situation.
Does pumpkin seed extract have a diuretic effect?
Yes — pumpkin is thought to have diuretic properties, meaning it increases urination. This is actually why it may reduce how your body clears lithium, so it's important to flag if you take that medication.
Are there any inactive ingredients I should know about?
No inactive ingredients are listed for this product — it's just the pumpkin seed extract in liquid form.
