What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin seed oil at 1,000 mg per softgel capsule. The capsule itself is made from gelatin and vegetable glycerin, which are inactive ingredients that hold the oil in place.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pumpkin seed oil is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, an enlarged prostate in older men). For androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasite infection, and urinary tract infections, the evidence isn't established enough in our data to rate whether it works.
If you're considering it for one of these other uses, talk with your doctor about what the research currently shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin seed oil in this supplement form is generally well tolerated in most adults. The most common side effects reported in trials are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting—though these are typically mild.
Rarely, severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea have been reported, particularly with bitter-tasting pumpkin products; these have been linked to high levels of cucurbitacin, a compound found in wild pumpkins. There are also two rare case reports of temporary hair loss following consumption of high-cucurbitacin pumpkin products.
Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is extremely rare. Safety data for concentrated pumpkin seed oil supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well studied.
The facts note pumpkin as food is fine, but the concentrated supplement form lacks enough data—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before taking it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium. Pumpkin seed oil may reduce how your kidneys clear it, and your lithium dose might need adjustment.
If you take any other medications that affect kidney function or fluid balance, confirm with your healthcare provider that this product is okay for you.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pumpkin seed oil may help with benign prostatic hyperplasia; evidence for other uses is not yet established. If you take lithium, you'll want to check with your doctor before starting this product, since it may affect how your body clears the medication.
It's generally well tolerated, though mild digestive side effects can happen. Run it past your own doctor or pharmacist, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any other medications.
