Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: vitamin B7 (biotin), a B vitamin your body uses to help convert food into energy and support healthy skin, hair, and nails. There are no inactive ingredients — you're getting biotin and nothing else.

Does it work?

Not established
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Biotin's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: hair and nail health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Alopecia areata, Brittle nails, Hair loss, Nail strength.
  • The closest evidence on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Alopecia areata (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Biotin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Brittle nails.

Biotin is likely effective for treating biotin deficiency, which is rare but can happen with certain medical conditions or medications. For hair loss (alopecia areata), there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate how well it works.

For multiple sclerosis and seborrheic dermatitis (a scaly skin condition), the evidence suggests it's probably not effective. If you're considering biotin for a specific condition, talk it over with your doctor to see if it fits your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Biotin is generally well tolerated, even at fairly high doses, because your body gets rid of the excess in urine. Rarely, high-dose biotin has been linked to mild diarrhea — the documented cases involved doses of 300 mg daily.

One isolated case report described a patient who developed eosinophilic pleuropericarditis (inflammation in the lining around the heart and lungs) after taking high-dose biotin along with other supplements, but it's unclear whether biotin was the culprit, and no similar cases have been reported since. Amounts from food and standard prenatal vitamins are appropriate, but check with your doctor before taking high-dose biotin supplements.

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. No medication interactions are currently documented, and safety information is well characterized.

Pure Biotin is a straightforward, single-ingredient supplement useful if you have a biotin deficiency — a rare condition your doctor would identify. It's generally well tolerated, though high doses can occasionally cause mild diarrhea.

If you're taking it for hair, skin, or a neurological condition, talk with your doctor about whether biotin is the right choice for your needs. Ask your pharmacist to confirm there's nothing to watch for with your current medications.
