Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Pycnogenol, a standardized extract from maritime pine bark. The capsule also includes inactive ingredients — hypromellose, purified water, cellulose, and magnesium stearate — which help hold the supplement together but play no active role.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pycnogenol has possibly effective evidence for osteoarthritis and chronic venous insufficiency (swelling and poor circulation in the legs from vein damage). For asthma, the evidence is also rated possibly effective.
On the other hand, the data shows it is possibly ineffective for high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia). If you're considering this for one of those first three conditions, talk with us about whether the evidence feels strong enough for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Maritime pine bark extract is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data is limited. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, and vertigo — a few people have also reported headaches.
One case of chest pain and one case of worsened heart failure have been reported, but both occurred in patients with prior heart disease, so it's unclear whether the supplement caused them. The safety data advises against using this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because there isn't enough research to know it's safe in those situations.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before you start if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), diabetes medications, or immunosuppressant drugs. The extract may increase bleeding risk, lower blood sugar further, or reduce how well immune-suppressing drugs work.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pycnogenol may be worth considering if you have osteoarthritis, chronic venous insufficiency, or asthma and want to explore a plant-based option. If you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or immunosuppressants, check with your pharmacist first — the extract could affect how those work.

Pycnogenol 50 mg by Bluebonnet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Pycnogenol 50 mg by Bluebonnet contains maritime pine bark extract, which has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel). The extract may slow down how your blood clots, which could increase your bleeding risk if you're already on these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check if you take diabetes medications or drugs that suppress your immune system. The extract may lower blood sugar levels on its own, so combining it with diabetes drugs could raise your risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) — you'd need close monitoring and possibly a dose adjustment.
Similarly, because the extract appears to boost immune activity in the lab, it might make immunosuppressants less effective, though this hasn't been confirmed in people yet.
Altogether, these interactions span 322 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to look up your exact prescriptions before you start.
