Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Pycnogenol, a standardized extract from maritime pine bark, at 50 mg per capsule. The extract includes inactive ingredients—rice powder, vegetable magnesium stearate, and a gelatin capsule—that help deliver and hold the supplement together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Pycnogenol is rated possibly effective for osteoarthritis and chronic venous insufficiency (swelling and pain in the legs from poor blood flow). It shows possibly ineffective evidence for lowering cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) and possibly effective evidence for asthma, though the strength of these findings varies.
If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk it over with your doctor about whether the evidence makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pycnogenol is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal complaints, dizziness, and vertigo.
A single case of chest pain and one report of worsened heart failure have been reported, though it's unclear whether the supplement caused them. During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so the facts advise against use.
The same applies to breastfeeding—there's insufficient information to know whether it's safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Pycnogenol, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (such as warfarin or aspirin), antidiabetes medications, or immunosuppressants. All three types carry Moderate-severity interaction risk with this supplement.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pycnogenol may help with osteoarthritis and leg swelling, but it can thin the blood and lower blood sugar, which matters if you take blood thinners or diabetes medication. It may also interfere with immunosuppressants.
If you take any prescription medications—especially for blood clotting, diabetes, or immune function—check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.
