What’s inside
Full disclosure
REL Super Chlorella is a one-ingredient product: chlorella, a freshwater algae. The capsule also contains gelatin as an inactive ingredient.
Chlorella is a nutrient-dense green algae used in supplements for its protein, vitamins, minerals, and other compounds. This product contains it as a dried powder in capsule form.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence is insufficient to rate — meaning we don't yet have reliable data one way or the other.
If you're considering this for any of those uses, talk with your doctor about what the current science supports and whether it makes sense for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated over the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely between brands — that's important to know. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration.
These tend to show up early, especially in the first two weeks. Rare serious effects include anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction).
There isn't enough safety data to recommend chlorella unless your doctor approves it. If you're pregnant, the data suggests it's possibly safe, but that's not a guarantee — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
For breastfeeding, we don't have enough data either way — again, check with your healthcare provider.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) or any photosensitizing drugs. Both are Moderate-severity interactions — chlorella's vitamin K can weaken warfarin's effect, and chlorella itself can make your skin more sun-sensitive, especially if you're already taking a drug with that risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
REL Super Chlorella may be worth considering if you have pregnancy-related iron deficiency and your doctor thinks it's appropriate. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interactions are real.
Quality varies between brands, so sourcing matters. Run your full medication list through the checker on this page and talk it over with your own healthcare provider before starting.

REL Super Chlorella by Systemic Formulas Bio Nutriment Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
REL Super Chlorella contains chlorella, which has documented interactions with two medication types.
The most serious concern is with photosensitizing drugs (Moderate severity), where chlorella may add to their effects — chlorella itself can cause photosensitization, and case reports describe patients who developed swelling and rash on sun-exposed skin after taking it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The other notable interaction is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner (Moderate severity). Chlorella contains significant vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works; there's at least one case report of this happening when someone started chlorella supplements.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications.
If you take any photosensitizing medication or warfarin, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product — they can advise whether it's right for you and if any adjustments are needed. Use the medication checker on this page to see your exact drugs and their interaction details.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
