What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has one active ingredient: rue glycerite liquid extract. The other ingredients — glycerin and mint flavor — are inactive and serve to preserve and flavor the liquid.
Rue has a long history in herbal medicine, though the evidence for most of its traditional uses isn't well established in the data we hold. The extract form here contains the plant's compounds in a glycerin base, which is designed to be taken by mouth.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The data we hold rates rue's effectiveness as insufficient evidence to rate for abortion, cancer, contraception, dyspepsia (indigestion), and insect repellent. In plain terms, that means the research doesn't yet support or rule out these uses.
If you're considering rue for a specific health concern, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current evidence actually shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When taken orally in food amounts, rue is generally well tolerated. The dried herb taken in medicinal doses also tends to be generally well tolerated, though a full safety evaluation hasn't been done.
Fresh rue, though, is generally considered unsafe. In medicinal doses, the dried herb can cause cramps, drowsiness, depression, dizziness, stomach irritation, and sleep disturbances.
Rue can also trigger uterine contractions and abortion, and high doses may cause breathing problems. On the skin, it can cause contact dermatitis (irritation) and phototoxic reactions.
Rue is rated likely unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided — the safety data advises against it. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough data on file to know either way, so talk with your pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take photosensitizing drugs — medications that increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight — check your exact prescriptions before using this product. There's a moderate risk that rue could heighten your risk of phototoxic skin reactions.
No other drug interactions are documented in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Rue has some traditional uses, but the evidence doesn't yet back up most of them. The main caution is if you take photosensitizing medications — you'll need to check that.
Pregnancy is a clear reason to avoid it. Anyone using this product should talk with their pharmacist first, especially if they're on any medications or are pregnant or nursing.

Rue Mint Flavor by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Rue Mint Flavor by TerraVita contains rue glycerite, which has a documented interaction with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight).
The concern is moderate: rue contains compounds called furanocoumarins and psoralens that can increase your risk of phototoxic reactions — essentially severe sunburn or skin damage — if you're also taking drugs that heighten that sensitivity. There's even a case report of someone who had a worse reaction to psoralen and ultraviolet A (PUVA) therapy when rue was involved.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take any photosensitizing medications, you'll want to check your exact drugs with the tool on this page before starting rue. Altogether, these interactions span 334 individual medications.
Beyond that category, no other drug interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check. That's not a guarantee none exist — it just means the data we hold doesn't flag them.
