Squash Alcohol Free is a single-ingredient liquid supplement containing squash seed extract. The extract is made from the dried seeds and delivered in a base of glycerin and water — no alcohol, despite the name on the label.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence we hold shows squash seed extract is possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the enlargement of the prostate gland that can make urination difficult. For other uses listed — androgenic alopecia (pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections — the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin and squash products eaten as food are generally well tolerated. With concentrated seed supplements like this one, there isn't enough safety data to be certain, so the caution is to talk with your doctor before starting unless you've already been approved.
The most common side effects from oral pumpkin products are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. In rare cases, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported.
There are also two case reports of adults who developed significant hair loss or severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating bitter-tasting or wild pumpkin — effects linked to a compound called cucurbitacin that concentrates in wild varieties.
