Stomach upset — abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting — is the most commonly reported side effect in trials. Very rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported.

There are also two case reports of substantial temporary hair loss and severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea linked to bitter-tasting or wild squash varieties, which contain high levels of a compound called cucurbitacin.
