Tansy contains thujone, a compound that can be toxic — internal use is generally discouraged. The safety data advises against using tansy during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because of the thujone content and tansy's traditional use to bring on menstruation or abortion.

If swallowed, thujone toxicity can cause rapid or irregular heartbeat, fast breathing, severe stomach upset, vomiting, enlarged pupils, liver and kidney damage, and in rare cases, death. Deaths have occurred from as little as 10 drops of tansy oil, sometimes within 1 to 3.5 hours.

Applied to skin, tansy may trigger reactions like eczema or photosensitivity (sun-triggered rashes) in people sensitive to plants in the daisy family.
