Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: tart cherry extract. Tart cherry is a concentrated form of the fruit, traditionally used to support recovery after exercise and athletic performance.

The capsules also contain gelatin and rice flour as inactive ingredients—these are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.

Does it work?

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Sour Cherry's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: joint mobility and inflammation support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Exercise-induced muscle soreness, Gout, Osteoarthritis, Range of motion, Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia, Rheumatoid arthritis — and 3 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Sour Cherry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Exercise-induced muscle soreness (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Sour Cherry is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Osteoarthritis, Gout, Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia, Range of motion.

The evidence is mixed. Tart cherry is rated possibly effective for athletic performance.

For other uses listed—ADHD, cognitive function, exercise-induced muscle soreness, respiratory infections after exercise, and fibromyalgia—the evidence isn't established enough to rate. That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the data we hold isn't solid enough to say one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tart cherry is generally well tolerated when you eat it as whole fruit or juice. The concentrated extract in supplements is less studied, so caution is warranted.

The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, loose stools, and general gastrointestinal upset—a clinical study found about 29% of children taking concentrated tart cherry juice twice daily reported belly pain. One isolated case of a skin reaction possibly linked to cherry allergy has been reported.

For pregnancy and breastfeeding, tart cherry is rated likely safe.

Tart Cherry by Herbal Secrets: Common Questions

Does Tart Cherry by Herbal Secrets interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Tart Cherry. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tart Cherry contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is tart cherry safe to take if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
Yes—tart cherry is rated likely safe during pregnancy and lactation. That said, this product is a concentrated supplement, not just whole fruit, so talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist to make sure it fits your individual situation.
What side effects might I have?
Most common are stomach upset, loose stools, and abdominal pain. A clinical study found about 29% of children taking concentrated juice twice daily reported belly pain. One rare case of a skin reaction possibly linked to cherry allergy was reported. Stop and check with your pharmacist if anything bothers you.
Does tart cherry actually work for what I want to use it for?
It depends on your goal. Tart cherry is possibly effective for athletic performance. For ADHD, thinking, exercise soreness, exercise-related infections, and fibromyalgia, the evidence isn't solid enough to say—the data we hold just isn't there yet.
Will this interact with my medications?
No interactions are documented for tart cherry in our data. That said, use the interaction checker on this page with your exact medications, and ask your pharmacist to be sure.
Why is the safety data weaker for the supplement than the whole fruit?
Concentrated supplements haven't been studied as much as eating whole tart cherries or drinking fresh juice. We have less information on what happens at supplement doses, so caution is wise—but what we do know suggests it's generally well tolerated.
