Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: LJ100 Eurycoma longifolia root extract, a standardized form derived from the roots of the Eurycoma longifolia plant. The remaining ingredients are inactive fillers and binders — microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, modified cellulose gum, and silica — that help form and stabilize the tablet.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: male libido tonic and hormonal balance support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related testosterone deficiency, Erectile dysfunction (ED), Male Infertility, Muscle strength, Sexual desire, testosterone levels — and 2 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Eurycoma Longifolia is rated "Possibly Effective" for Sexual desire (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Eurycoma Longifolia is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Erectile dysfunction (ED), Muscle strength, Age-related testosterone deficiency, Male Infertility.

The evidence for Tongkat Ali is mixed. It's rated Possibly Effective for sexual desire, based on clinical research.

For athletic performance, the evidence points to Possibly Ineffective. For back pain, osteoporosis, and diabetes, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works — the data we hold simply isn't conclusive.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Eurycoma longifolia is generally well tolerated in short-term studies, but long-term safety and the quality of different products aren't well established. The supplement may increase testosterone levels; if yours rise above the normal range, there's a risk of testosterone-related side effects including acne, insulin resistance, and liver damage.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to possible hormonal effects and insufficient safety information.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Eurycoma Longifolia.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 248 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on propranolol (Inderal) — the supplement can reduce its levels and weaken its effect (Moderate severity). Additionally, if you take medications metabolized by CYP1A2, CYP2C19, or CYP2A6 liver enzymes, or if you're on testosterone therapy, those interactions should be reviewed (Minor severity), though they're mainly theoretical at this point.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Tongkat Ali may be worth considering if you're interested in sexual desire support, but it's not proven for athletic performance or several other uses. If you take propranolol or testosterone therapy, or use medications broken down by certain liver enzymes, talk with your pharmacist before starting — this product has documented interactions that could affect how your drugs work.

Anyone pregnant, breastfeeding, or concerned about long-term safety should check with their doctor first.

Propranolol (Inderal)

Eurycoma longifolia can reduce the levels and clinical effects of propranolol.
A small clinical study in healthy persons shows that taking a single dose of a water-based Eurycoma longifolia extract 200 mg, in combination with a single dose of propranolol 80 mg, reduces the propranolol area under the curve (AUC) by 29%, reduces the peak concentration by 42%, and increases time to peak concentration by 86% when compared with control. Since the elimination half-life of propranolol did not change, it seems that Eurycoma longifolia alters the kinetics of propranolol by decreasing its absorption in the gut, and not by altering its metabolism. It is not known if separating administration will prevent this interaction.

Likelihood Probable Evidence A
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2A6 (Cyp2A6) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2A6 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2A6 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia might increase levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that methanolic Eurycoma longifolia root extract weakly inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Testosterone

Theoretically, Eurycoma longifolia may further increase levels of testosterone.
A clinical study in aging males with testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL shows that taking a specific water extract of Eurycoma longifolia roots (Physta; Biotropics Malaysia) 100-200 mg daily with breakfast for 12 weeks increases total testosterone levels by 8% to 11% when compared with placebo. It is unclear whether this increase would occur in individuals with normal testosterone levels.

Tongkat Ali by Source Naturals: Common Questions

Does Tongkat Ali by Source Naturals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Tongkat Ali has a known interaction with 248 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Tongkat Ali contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Does Tongkat Ali actually improve sexual desire?
The evidence rates it as Possibly Effective for sexual desire, meaning there's some clinical support, but it's not conclusive. Results vary person to person.
Will it help with athletic performance?
The research we have rates it as Possibly Ineffective for athletic performance, so that's not a reliable use.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — the safety data advises against it during pregnancy because of possible hormonal effects, and there isn't enough safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor if you're pregnant or nursing.
What are the side effects?
Eurycoma longifolia is generally well tolerated short-term. The main concern is that it may raise testosterone levels; if yours go above normal, you could develop acne, insulin resistance, or liver damage. Long-term safety isn't well studied.
Is this product safe to take long-term?
Long-term safety isn't well established. Studies show it's generally tolerated in the short run, but we don't have enough data on what happens with prolonged use, and product quality varies between brands.
Why does this interact with so many medications?
The ingredient may affect how your liver breaks down certain drugs through multiple enzyme pathways. That's why the interaction count is high — it's not because the supplement directly interferes with 248 different drugs, but rather because it could change how your body processes medications in those categories.
