Protease, lipase, and lactase are generally well tolerated by most adults, but digestive upset is possible. Rarely, allergic reactions have occurred — one reported case of lactase-induced contact dermatitis and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in a worker exposed to powdered lactase.

Protease used in occupational settings has occasionally triggered allergic rhinitis or asthma in people exposed to airborne dust. During pregnancy, the safety data for protease and lipase is limited; lipase and protease are best avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor says otherwise.
