Strong evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: molybdenum for enzyme function and nutrient metabolism.
  • We looked for evidence on: Molybdenum deficiency, Iron deficiency anemia, Sulfite sensitivity, Carbohydrate metabolism, Enzyme cofactor insufficiency.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Molybdenum is rated "Likely Effective" for Molybdenum deficiency (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Molybdenum is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Iron deficiency anemia.

Molybdenum is likely effective for molybdenum deficiency — a rare condition in people eating a normal diet. For acne, iron deficiency anemia, asthma, osteoporosis, and esophageal cancer, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold.

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Molybdenum from food and standard prenatal vitamins is generally fine. High-dose supplements, though, may cause problems and are rarely necessary.

One case report documented severe toxicity (psychosis, seizures, and brain damage) from very high doses taken over a short period — levels far beyond what food or normal supplementation provides. The mineral is generally well tolerated when you stay at or below the safe upper limit of 2 mg per day.
