Vital-Zymes Chewable contains 19 ingredients, most of them digestive enzymes that break down food in different ways. You've got lipase (which breaks down fats), lactase (which helps digest milk sugar), acid protease and alkaline protease (which break down proteins), and phytase (which helps with mineral absorption).
The blend also includes several carbohydrate-digesting enzymes like amylase, sucrase, and maltase, plus some you may not recognize—like serratia peptidase and enzymes in proprietary blends that work on various plant fibers and starches. The inactive ingredients are xylitol, mannitol, stearic acid, silicon dioxide, and natural cherry flavor—basically the stuff that makes it chewable and taste decent.

The evidence on most of these enzymes is thin. Lactase is the one backed by solid research—it's effective for lactose intolerance, which is why it's in here.
For lipase, phytase, and the proteases, the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate them for any condition. The other enzymes in the blend don't have effectiveness ratings in our records either.

How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The enzymes in this product are generally well tolerated in adults. No adverse effects have been reported in adults for lipase or lactase.
The proteases (acid protease and alkaline protease) may occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions in sensitive people, and there are rare case reports of allergic reactions to inhaled protease dust in workers—but that's from occupational exposure, not from taking a chewable tablet. Phytase has similar rare allergy reports from occupational exposure in the animal-feed industry, not from supplement use.
For pregnancy, the data is spotty. Lactase is likely safe to use during pregnancy.
Lipase, phytase, and the proteases all have limited or no pregnancy data—the safety notes advise checking with your doctor before regular use. For breastfeeding, there's not enough data on any of these to know either way; talk with your healthcare provider if you're nursing and want to take this.
