What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: vitamin K at 100 micrograms per tablet. Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that your body needs to produce clotting proteins and maintain bone health.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients—cellulose, stearic acid, silica, and magnesium stearate—which are common binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Vitamin K is effective for treating vitamin K deficiency conditions, including low clotting factors (hypoprothrombinemia and vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency) and hemorrhagic disease. It's also effective for managing warfarin anticoagulation when that's medically appropriate.
There's possibly effective evidence for osteoporosis, though the data we hold on that is less established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Taken by mouth, vitamin K is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects are mild: diarrhea, nausea, and stomach upset affect a small number of people.
The safety notes advise that dietary amounts are fine for healthy people, but you should check with your doctor before taking supplements. This is especially important if you're on any medications.
Vitamin K is rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or other blood thinners that work like warfarin, you need to check with your doctor before taking this product—vitamin K can reduce their effectiveness. No other interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is useful if you have a vitamin K deficiency or your doctor recommends it for bone health. But if you take warfarin or similar blood thinners, you must talk to your doctor or pharmacist before starting—this vitamin can interfere with how those drugs work.
