Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Promotes heart, bone and circulatory health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Cardiovascular disease (CVD), Osteoporosis, Vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency (VKCFD), Hemorrhagic disease, Hypoprothrombinemia, Bone mineralization — and 2 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Vitamin K is rated "Effective" for Hemorrhagic disease (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Vitamin K is rated "Effective" for Hypoprothrombinemia, Vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency (VKCFD).
  • Also on file: Vitamin K is rated "Possibly Effective" for Osteoporosis.

Vitamin K2 is effective for treating vitamin K deficiency conditions — low levels of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors and certain bleeding disorders. It's also effective for managing warfarin anticoagulation when coordinated with your doctor.

For osteoporosis, the evidence is possibly effective, meaning there's some promise but not yet strong proof.

Vitamin K in normal food amounts and most supplements is safe for healthy adults, but if you're considering supplements, check with your doctor first. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, vitamin K is likely safe, though you should still discuss any supplementation with your healthcare provider.

If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinner, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding this supplement. Vitamin K can reduce the blood-thinning effect, which is a Major concern.

Formula

Vitamin K's most active form

Andrew Lessman's Vitamin K2 MK-7 120 provides the most active and beneficial form of Vitamin K-2, Menaquinone-7 (MK-7). Vitamin K2 MK-7 is now recognized as essential for bone and heart health through its role in regulating calcium metabolism. The "K" in Vitamin K2 MK-7's name stems from the role of vitamin K-1 in blood clotting, since it was discovered in Germany where "Koagulation" is spelled with a K. Vitamin K-2 MK-7's unique importance instead relates to its scientifically established central role in calcium utilization and thus bone, heart and cardiovascular health. Essentially, Vitamin K2 MK-7 promotes the retention of calcium in healthy bone while discouraging its being deposited in other tissues causing undesirable calcification of arteries, heart valves, etc. By discouraging calcification, Vitamin K2 MK-7 promotes flexible, resilient arteries and heart valves, which is a defining characteristic of cardiovascular health. In short, K2 MK-7 acts like a "traffic cop" directing calcium to the vital tissues where it is required while keeping it out of those where it is not desired. Since we all must consume calcium daily our healthy bones and flexible arteries require K2 MK-7. Sadly, there is no significant source of Vitamin K2 MK-7 in the typical American diet making supplementation the only reliable method of acquiring this essential vitamin.
