Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Strong

Clinical evidence supports at least one of this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: promotes heart bone and circulatory health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Cardiovascular disease (CVD), Hemorrhagic disease, Hypoprothrombinemia, Osteoporosis, Stroke, Vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency (VKCFD) — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Vitamin K is rated "Effective" for Hemorrhagic disease (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Vitamin K is rated "Effective" for Hypoprothrombinemia, Warfarin anticoagulation, Vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency (VKCFD).
  • Also on file: Vitamin K is rated "Possibly Effective" for Osteoporosis.

Vitamin K2 is effective for treating vitamin K deficiency conditions, including low blood clotting factors (hypoprothrombinemia and vitamin K-dependent clotting factors deficiency), hemorrhagic disease, and reversing excessive anticoagulation from warfarin. The evidence also suggests it may be helpful for osteoporosis, though the data here is rated possibly effective — meaning there's promise, but more research is needed to be certain.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Taken by mouth, vitamin K is generally well tolerated in healthy people at the doses found in food and most supplements. The most common side effects are mild: nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, and abdominal pain affect a small number of people.

Serious side effects are very rare. That said, the safety notes advise checking with your doctor before taking supplements — normal dietary amounts are fine, but supplementation warrants a conversation with your provider.

At least one ingredient has a documented Major-severity interaction. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Vitamin K.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Major.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 2 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

The major concern is warfarin (Coumadin) and other blood thinners. Vitamin K can weaken their effects, so if you take any blood thinner, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting this supplement.

Formula

Vitamin K's most beneficial form

Vitamin K2 MK-7 120 provides the most beneficial form of vitamin K in the form of vitamin K2 menaquinone-7 (K2 MK-7). Vitamin K2 MK-7 is now recognized as essential for bone and heart health through its role in regulating calcium metabolism. Unlike typical vitamin K1 and its role in blood clotting, vitamin K2 MK-7 is unique given its essential role in calcium utilization and thus bone, heart and circulatory health. Essentially, K2 MK-7 promotes the retention of calcium in healthy bone while inhibiting undesirable calcification in tissues such as arteries, heart valves, etc. By reducing calcification, K2 MK-7 promotes flexible, resilient arteries and heart valves – a defining characteristic of cardiovascular health. In short, K2 MK-7 helps our body retain calcium where required (our bones) and reduce deposits where calcification is to be avoided. Unfortunately, there is no meaningful source of K2 MK-7 in the American diet, so achieving these desirable heart and bone health benefits requires supplementation of this essential vitamin.
