XymoZyme Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by XYMOGEN
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking XymoZyme against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of XymoZyme by XYMOGEN
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
XymoZyme is a blend of 17 digestive enzymes designed to support nutrient breakdown. The formula includes protease and peptidase (which break down protein), lipase (fat digestion), amylase (carbohydrate digestion), lactase (milk sugar breakdown), plus bromelain from pineapple and papain from papaya—both proteolytic enzymes that also have anti-inflammatory roles.
It also contains specialty enzymes like phytase, cellulase, xylanase, and others that target specific plant compounds and complex carbohydrates. The inactive ingredients are hypromellose, water, microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, and silica—standard capsule materials.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence for most ingredients in this product is not established in the data we hold. Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance—the main reason people take it.
For the other enzymes—lipase, phytase, bromelain, papain, and the rest—the available evidence is insufficient to rate their use for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease, dyspepsia, or any of the other purposes sometimes claimed. That doesn't mean they don't work; it means we don't have solid clinical evidence yet to back those claims.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Digestive enzymes are generally well tolerated when taken as directed, but they're not without risks. Protease, lactase, lipase, bromelain, and papain can all cause mild digestive upset—diarrhea, flatulence, stomach pain, nausea—in some people.
More importantly, rare allergic reactions have been reported to these enzymes, especially occupational exposure to airborne forms. Occupational studies of phytase and bromelain, for example, have documented asthma and hypersensitivity reactions in workers.
Papain in particular can occasionally cause serious effects at high doses (esophageal perforation, severe gastritis) and respiratory allergic reactions from inhalation. During pregnancy, the safety data advise against protease and bromelain.
Papain and concentrated papaya products are best avoided in pregnancy too. For lactase and lipase, there isn't enough data to know either way—talk with your doctor or pharmacist before regular use in pregnancy.
During breastfeeding, there is little or no safety data for most of these enzymes; breastfeeding is specifically not recommended for protease and bromelain without medical advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Stop and check with your pharmacist if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners or anti-clotting medications like aspirin, clopidogrel, or enoxaparin)—bromelain may increase bleeding risk. If you take warfarin, flag that too—papain in this product may increase its blood-thinning effect.
Also check before adding this if you're on tetracycline antibiotics, because bromelain might raise their levels. No other medication interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may be worth considering if you have trouble digesting certain foods (especially milk sugar, where lactase has good evidence) or if you're looking for general digestive enzyme support. If you take any blood thinners, antiplatelet drugs, tetracycline antibiotics, or warfarin, you must check your exact medications with the tool on this page first—bromelain and papain interact with several of these.
Talk to your pharmacist before starting, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a digestive condition that needs medical oversight.

XymoZyme by XYMOGEN Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
XymoZyme by XYMOGEN contains enzymes that may interact with certain medications.
Bromelain, one of the active ingredients, is the source of the most serious documented interaction—it may increase bleeding risk if you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (blood thinners or anti-clotting medications). This is rated Moderate severity, and there is even one case report of minor bruising in a patient taking bromelain with naproxen.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Bromelain also has a Minor interaction with tetracycline antibiotics (a class of oral antibiotics); laboratory work suggests it might raise their levels in your bloodstream, though a human study found no difference at typical doses. Papain, another ingredient, has a Moderate interaction with warfarin (a blood thinner)—one case report documented an unsafe spike in blood-thinning effect when papain was added to the patient's regimen.
We could not check several other ingredients in this formula—Beta-Glucanase, Cellulase, Xylanase, Hemicellulase, Amylase, Alpha-Galactosidase, Invertase, Peptidase, Pectinase, and Amyloglucosidase—because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 141 individual medications.
Please run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page before you start.

For each ingredient in XymoZyme with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Bromelain
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Bromelain may have antiplatelet effects and may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
There is one case report of a patient experiencing minor bruising while taking bromelain with naproxen. Bromelain is thought to have antiplatelet activity. Whether this interaction is of concern with topical bromelain is unclear. Interference with coagulation of burn wounds has been reported in a patient receiving bromelain-based enzymatic debridement. However, observational research has found that topical bromelain debridement is not associated with increases or decreases in laboratory markers of coagulation when compared with surgical debridement.
Tetracycline Antibiotics
Theoretically, bromelain might increase levels of tetracycline antibiotics.
Laboratory research suggests that bromelain might increase the absorption of tetracycline antibiotics. However, a study in healthy adults reported no difference in tetracycline plasma levels when a 500 mg dose was taken with or without bromelain 80 mg.
Papain
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, papain might increase the effects and side effects of warfarin.
In one case report, a patient previously stable on warfarin was found to have an international normalization ratio (INR) of 7.4, which was attributed to ingestion of a supplement containing papain from papaya extract.
