Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Yarrow product and its label doesn't state a use — see Yarrow's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for yarrow's effectiveness isn't established in our data. It's been used traditionally for tonsillitis, wound healing, eczema, period pain, and yeast infection, but we don't have reliable evidence to rate how well it works for any of these.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Yarrow taken by mouth or applied vaginally is generally well tolerated. Topical use is the main concern — it can cause skin irritation, allergic rashes, or hives due to compounds in the plant, and has been reported to cause sun-related skin reactions and airborne contact dermatitis.

One person in a clinical trial reported worsened acne after vaginal use. Handling the flowers has also triggered nasal symptoms and asthma in at least one person.

Don't use this product during pregnancy — it's traditionally been avoided because it may affect the uterus. There isn't enough safety information for breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it then too.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Yarrow is traditionally used for several conditions, but the evidence supporting those uses is limited and safety data are sparse. The main caution is if you take lithium — yarrow could raise your levels.

If you have a history of allergies or sensitive skin, be aware topical irritation is possible. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you're on any medications.
